Part of my community – Maryam’s story

Maryam was referred to the Restart Scheme, delivered by Triage in Middlesbrough for further support in her job search, as she felt that she wasn’t getting anywhere independently with her previous attempts.

Maryam moved to the UK from Iran in 2018 and prior to joining Restart Scheme, she was studying ESOL to improve her English reading, writing and language, to improve her chances of finding work and to settle in her new community. Maryam told us: “When I first moved to the UK, I felt lonely and isolated compared to my life back in Iran. I was a Gym Manager and had a great social life with my friends and family.”

During her initial appointment, she met with Employment Adviser, Will, who quickly identified that how she was feeling was affecting her confidence and motivation to find work.

Our Employment Advisers will assess job readiness, and participants’ strengths, needs and proximity to entering and sustaining employment. Our service focuses on participants’ transferrable skills and their individual goals for their future careers.

Will worked closely with Maryam to create a high standard CV, highlighting all her skills, experience and attributes. Whilst creating this, Will taught Maryam how to tailor her CV to specific job sectors depending on what job she was applying for.

Maryam had previously completed a 12-week placement in care with the NHS, which gave her an insight into the care sector, so, she decided to tailor her CV around this and begin applying for jobs. In the meantime, Will carried out a Better Off Calculation with Maryam to give her an idea of what she would be able to earn on a full and part-time wage.

After taking advantage of the many in-house courses the Restart Scheme has to offer, Maryam felt prepared and confident in finding work and it showed through her approach and efforts. It wasn’t long before she was invited to interview with a local Domiciliary Carer within her community.

“I am very pleased to have been part of Maryam’s employability journey and it is great to see that each week, confidence and keen motivation to find work has been the forefront of Maryam’s journey,” said Will

Each of our offices feature an Employment Hub, which provides access to PCs, phones and local job boards with the most up to date vacancies from our local Recruitment Consultants.

With preparation and practice interviews, Maryam was offered a job as a Care Assistant!

Maryam shared: “I am very thankful to Will and the team at Triage, for their support in helping me find a job in care. I am in a much better position than I was a year ago and I have great friends and my partner around me too. Thank you!”
