Unlocking opportunities - Awa’s story

When Awa joined the Restart Scheme - delivered by Northern Rights, she was determined to return to work and create a brighter future for herself. Keen to develop her skills and confidence, she explored opportunities in the care, retail, and production sectors while attending external ESOL classes and studying Health and Social Care at college.

Throughout her time on the Restart Scheme, Awa worked together with her Employment Adviser David, and she participated in a range of courses focused on building confidence, developing resilience, and strengthening interview techniques. In addition, she attended employer awareness sessions, giving her valuable insight into different industries and the variety of opportunities available within them.

The Restart Scheme supports participants to explore a wide range of career opportunities, helping them identify roles that match their skills, interests and ambitions. Through personalised employability support, training and direct engagement with employers, participants are equipped with the confidence, knowledge and practical tools needed to successfully transition into sustainable employment.

To help Awa move confidently towards employment, David ensured her Right to Work documentation was in place and completed a Better Off Calculation to highlight the financial advantages of returning to work. Together, they strengthened her CV, showcasing her skills and experience in a way that would appeal to potential employers and maximise her job prospects.

With support from David and the team, Awa engaged enthusiastically in job-search sessions, activities and group vacancy workshops. These sessions not only increased her access to live vacancies but also gave her the opportunity to be promoted directly to employers through reverse marketing.

A breakthrough came when Awa's CV was submitted for a full-time role in food production with a local employer. Following a successful paid induction, she impressed the employer with her enthusiasm and commitment and was offered a full-time position on the same day.

Today, Awa is thriving in her new role and looking ahead to a positive future. Her journey demonstrates how determination, ongoing self-development, and tailored support can help individuals overcome barriers, build confidence, and achieve sustainable employment.

Awa said: "Thank you for all the support, I am very happy to start my new job."

We wish Awa every success in her new role and look forward to seeing her continue to thrive.
