Turfmaster – John’s story

Turfmaster – John’s story

Prior to joining the Restart Scheme, John felt frustrated that he couldn’t find a suitable job to fit around his family. He was previously made redundant and, as a single parent, he needed work that would accommodate his family routine and childcare.

During his first appointment with us, he met his Employment Adviser, Thomas, who reviewed his CV and got to know John on a more personal level, to identify his skills and experience. Thomas told us: “As John had been self-employed previously, I suggested this as an option to consider as he could work around childcare hours.”

At first John wasn’t sure, as the costs involved in setting up a new business put him off, and he wasn’t financially able to fund this by himself.  We told John about the financial support offered by the Restart Scheme that could assist him in setting up his own business.

After further guidance and support, John decided to pursue becoming a self-employed gardener.  Together, John and Thomas researched everything that he would need, and the Restart Scheme supported with branding, marketing, and flyer printing. Financial support was provided by the Restart Scheme to purchase work clothes, PPE, and gardening tools to help get John started up.

Thomas told us: “John attended his following appointment in his van, which he had completely stickered out, with his new company logo and contact details on. He was ready to go, and I was very excited for him!

“John was extremely thankful for the support he received from myself and the team, and since being self-employed he has had numerous jobs and is loving life as a self-employed gardener.”

During an in-work support call, John shared:

“I wasn’t overly keen on joining the Restart Scheme, but the support I’ve received from Thomas and the team was above and beyond anything I’ve ever had before. The direct one-to-one support from someone who actually cares was brilliant!”
