Transition into work – Glenn’s story
When Glenn joined the Restart Scheme, he was worried about the financial transition back into work. Glenn rented privately on his own and had been out of work for 12 months. During this time, he had been caring for his mother after the loss of his father and in the meantime, he had lost a lot of confidence in himself.
Glenn’s Employment Adviser, Dean, completed a ‘Better Off Calculation’ to show Glenn how much better off he would be back in work. This was reassuring to Glenn, who had been concerned about how he would manage financially. Dean then worked with Glenn to help him create a gold standard CV that highlighted his skills and previous experience.
An opportunity arose with the NHS for a Customer Service Adviser role, so, together, Dan and Glenn completed the job application and tailored a cover letter to submit with his application and new CV.
Dean told us: “With a previous work background of admin and clerical roles and his enthusiasm, I had no doubt that Glenn would be successful.”
Glenn was selected for an online interview, and Dean helped him to prepare by holding mock interviews to practice any questions, answers, and his approach in an interview setting.
Glenn was over the moon when he heard he had been successful and was offered the job!
The Restart Scheme offered financial support to Glenn by providing vouchers for new clothes to wear for his new job, and by funding his travel costs until he received his first month’s wage. Glenn needed photo Identification to begin work and he received further support from Dean in applying for his provisional driving license.
“I’ve started work full-time with the NHS and I’m loving my new role”, said Glenn. “I am very grateful to Dean and to the Restart Scheme team for all the help and support that I’ve received!”
