A master plan – Tom’s story

Tom joined the Restart Scheme, and was motivated to find work that would financially support him to complete a master’s degree at university.

Following his graduation with a degree in Fashion and Design, Tom felt that he needed further support with interview skills and identifying suitable roles that would financially benefit him, whilst working flexible hours around a master’s degree.

During his initial appointment, Tom met with his Employment Adviser Jamie who got to know his situation and future goals. Together they created an action plan of how they would work towards reaching his goals in employment. Jamie identified that travel costs and interview skills had previously been a barrier for Tom, so enrolled him onto an in-house course that would support him with interview and job preparation.

The Restart Scheme offers various in-house courses that are free and delivered in both group settings and on a one-on-one basis. These sessions help participants to focus on different topics such as: self-confidence, people skills, IT skills, along with health and wellbeing and other employability skills.

On completion of several of our in-house courses, Tom had learned how to tailor his CV and apply interview techniques in person. Jamie shared:

“After completing a skills assessment, we identified Tom’s transferrable skills and other suitable roles that he could pursue with his experience. We provided Tom with vouchers to purchase new smart clothes for his upcoming interviews, and a train pass to ensure that finding and starting work didn’t affect him financially.”

Our Better Off Calculation tool gives participants an insight into the money they can earn based on the hours worked. The Restart Scheme also offers financial support, to ensure that our participants transition into sustainable work does not negatively impact them financially.
