Strength through support - Guy’s story

Guy joined the Restart Scheme during a particularly challenging period in his life following the loss of his wife. This had a significant impact on his mental health and confidence in seeking employment.
Employment Adviser, Daniel, met with Guy at his initial appointment and got to know his situation and background. Together they identified his main barriers to work, and how best to take the next steps towards finding work.
Wellbeing support within the Restart Scheme helps individuals manage personal challenges through specialist guidance on mental health, stress, and resilience. Delivered alongside employability support, it builds confidence and readiness for work.
Daniel shared: “We began by creating a new CV, as Guy had never had one before. This allowed him to clearly showcase his hands-on experience, particularly with his previous work as a Fencer. Developing his CV also helped him recognise his own strengths and value in the workplace.
“Recognising the importance of his wellbeing, Guy was referred to the Wellbeing for Work team, where he received tailored support to manage his mental health and build resilience. This holistic approach ensured he felt fully supported. At the same time, he explored future opportunities, including self-employment, with our in-house Skills Coach, Jacob, which enabled him to develop a more positive mindset and focus on his long-term aspirations.
“I worked closely with Guy to practice his interview techniques and answers, through guidance and practice, he learned how to present himself confidently, answer questions effectively, and manage his nerves. This preparation played a key role in helping him feel ready to engage with employers.”
From wellbeing support to skills development and career guidance, participants of Restart Scheme receive targeted help that addresses both personal and professional barriers. This flexible, person-centred approach empowers individuals to build confidence and move sustainably towards employment.
With growing confidence and the right support, Guy successfully secured a role as a Panel Maker with a former employer that specialises in landscaping. Returning to a familiar environment has provided Guy with stability, purpose, and a renewed sense of direction.
Guy’s journey demonstrates how personalised support can help individuals overcome significant barriers and move forward into sustained employment. With the right support, he has successfully re-entered employment and rebuilt a positive outlook for the future.
We wish Guy all the best in his new job and for the future.
