Steps to success – Donna’s story
When Donna joined the Restart Scheme, she had been out of work for four years while caring for her father. Her previous work experience was limited to a role at a factory role she previously had. During her time unemployed, Donna had volunteered with local food bank charities as this was flexible hours and something she enjoyed doing for the community.
During her initial appointment, she met with her Restart Scheme Employment Adviser, Lucy, who made her feel at ease discussing her situation at home and her previous experience.
Lucy told us: “Donna’s confidence was extremely low, and she struggled with her self-esteem and belief. Before joining the Restart Scheme, Donna was already receiving support with her mental health from Kyra - a local charity for women.
“We built on our working relationship together, and focused on what she could do rather than what she couldn’t.”
Once Donna and Lucy had created a new CV together, they began looking into the type of jobs that she could see herself doing and transferring her existing skills to. Lucy showed Donna how useful her volunteering work could be for demonstrating her skills to a new employer. After identifying a suitable role as a Retail Assistant, Lucy was on hand to support with the application process.
Donna felt nervous about getting to the interview stage of the recruitment process. Lucy arranged mock interviews with the Restart Scheme’s local Recruitment Manager, who provided valuable feedback and gave Donna a boost in confidence by talking about the positive impression she had made and the questions she had answered well.
Donna was successful at her interview and secured the Retail Assistant role for a new store opening in her area.
Donna shared: “I was nervous to start, but those feelings were replaced with excitement to start my new job! I now love it here. We all have a laugh at work, and I have made new friends.
“The Restart Scheme have really helped and supported me to get back up on my feet and take that step back into employment. They have even helped me with £100 vouchers to buy new work clothes, which is highly appreciated!”
Lucy said: “I see a massive difference in Donna. She has overcome her fears and is doing an amazing job in the store.”
