Finding direction – Andrew’s story

Andrew joined the Restart Scheme for support after he was made redundant from his previous job. He told us how he experienced a shift in his daily life and the loss of routine, structure and social interaction had an impact on his wellbeing, confidence and sense of direction.
With personalised guidance and support, theRestart Scheme helps participants rebuild confidence and get back on tracktowards work.
During his initial appointment, Andrew met with his Employment Adviser, Lisa who identified his barriers to work and worked with him to create an action plan with the end goal of starting work.
Lisa told us: “Andrew gradually rebuilt a routine by attending our office regularly, which helped to restore his confidence and motivation for work. Known for his friendly nature, he quickly became a valued presence among other participants and the team, offering IT support and encouragement when and where he could.
“Alongside his job search, Andrew strengthened his knowledge by gaining a certificate in COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) and Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety. These qualifications not only improved his confidence in these areas but brought his knowledge up to date ready to start work in environments where these skills were essential.
“Together, we worked on creating a new CV that highlighted all his attributes and transferrable skills. We prepared him for interviews with practice questions and interview scenarios. Andrew made positive changes to his health, with support from our Reed Wellbeing team he reduced his smoking to just one cigarette per day.”
Andrew’s efforts paid off when he was offered a full-time role as a Telesales Advisor.
“Now back in employment, Andrew feels optimistic about the future and is once again looking ahead with confidence, purpose and ambition”, said Lisa.
Through the Restart Scheme, Andrew was provided with a bike to support his commute to work, alongside vouchers to help him feel prepared and confident for both interviews and his new role.
Like many participants Andrew received support to ease his transition into employment, including vouchers for smart interview clothing and workwear. This ensures moving from benefits into paid work doesn’t add additional financial strain.
