Staying resilient - Thomas’s story

When Thomas joined the Restart Scheme, he had been unemployed for over a year and was struggling most with job searching and interview skills. Feeling out of practice and unsure of his next steps, he was looking for support to rebuild his confidence and direction.

Thomas met with his Employment Adviser, Michelle, who go to know him on a more personal level so that she could identify any areas for support along the way. During their discussion, Thomas talked about his experience as a night porter and crane operative, and together they explored potential roles within the hospitality, retail, and warehousing sectors. Michelle also helped him recognise how his existing skills could be transferred to other industries he was interested in pursuing.

During his time on the Restart Scheme, Thomas completed several courses focused on interview skills, CV building and IT to rebuild his confidence, strengthen his values and prepare for employer expectations. Michelle also worked with him on a Better Off Calculator, helping him understand the financial benefits of returning to employment.

Our Better Off Calculation shows participants how much they could earn in part‑time or full‑time work. It compares their current income with potential wages and in‑work benefits, giving them a clear picture of the financial advantages of returning to employment.

Michelle shared: “Thomas often struggled to stay in touch due to financial difficulties, so I arranged a 12‑month SIM card to help him stay connected with employers, advisers and his Work Coach. Although his initial job applications weren’t successful, he stayed positive. We provided one‑to‑one interview coaching, including mock interviews with the team, and Thomas attended our weekly Jobs Club while submitting multiple applications using his newly updated CV.”

Thomas was invited to interview with OCS for a full‑time position as a Cleaning Operative at a local education centre. He performed well and was offered the job soon after!

“Thomas is now enjoying his new role, and he has settled in well. He recently visited the office to thank the team and I for our support. He has been a pleasure to work with, and we wish him every success in the future,” said Michelle.
