Starting my teaching career – Angela’s story
Angela initially came out of work to raise her family, and as her youngest child started school, she was ready to begin her job search journey back into employment.
Angela joined the Restart Scheme for support with establishing a career in the education sector, as she didn’t know where to begin and was already studying towards this. As a single parent, Angela was hoping to find a job that she could work around childcare and her family.
During her initial appointment, she met with Employment Adviser, Mark, who took time getting to know Angela and what her job goals were. Together they completed a Better Off Calculator, taking into consideration the government funded childcare that she was entitled to.
Mark and Angela created an action plan, starting with updating her CV. They discussed all of Angela’s transferrable skills, experience, and ongoing Teaching Assistant qualification which they used to tailor her CV towards teaching roles.
After completing several of the Restart Scheme in-house courses, focusing on job applications and interview techniques, she felt ready to start applying for jobs using her new and improved CV. Angela was unsuccessful in her first two applications, but she didn’t let this knock her confidence and continued applying directly to schools. It wasn’t long before she secured an interview for a Teaching Assistant role at a local school.
Angela impressed the employer so much that they offered her the job!
Angela shared: “I am so grateful for all the help and support I received from the Restart Scheme. I’ve now started a new position that I love, and that suits my family commitments.”
