Serving up success - Sam’s story

Sam joined the Restart Scheme facing several barriers to employment, including low confidence, limited recent work experience, and a CV that did not fully reflect his skills and potential. At 22 years old, Sam was unsure about his career direction but had a strong interest in hospitality and was eager to find a pathway back into work.

Working closely with his Employment Adviser, Daniel, Samuel took part in a series of in-depth reviews to identify the challenges holding him back and create a personalised plan to help him move forward. Together, they explored his strengths, experience, and career goals, putting the foundations in place for a successful return to employment.

The Restart Scheme provides personalised support tailored to each participant's goals, helping individuals build confidence, develop new skills, and overcome barriers to employment.

To improve his job prospects, Daniel worked with Sam to create tailored CVs for both retail and hospitality roles, effectively highlighting his strengths, experience, and qualifications. Sam also completed a range of Restart Scheme training courses, including self-confidence, interview skills, and COSHH awareness (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health).

To further support his career ambitions, Daniel identified a hospitality pathway programme delivered in partnership with a local employer. Alongside this, Sam achieved Digital College qualifications in Hospitality Customer Service Skills and Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety, enhancing his industry knowledge and employability.

Rather than focusing on short-term job outcomes, the Restart Scheme supports participants to develop the skills, confidence, and resilience needed to thrive in sustainable employment and future career opportunities.

With newfound confidence, Sam was actively applying for roles aligned with his goals, when an interview opportunity arose with a local fast-food chain. He felt well prepared with practice interviews and was able to clearly demonstrate both his knowledge and enthusiasm for the role.

“His hard work paid off when he was offered the job just a couple of days later, marking a significant milestone in his journey”, said Daniel.

“Reflecting on his progress, it is clear how far Sam has come. He left the Restart Scheme with improved confidence, recognised industry qualifications, and professional CVs that showcase his abilities. Most importantly, he secured a role in a sector he was passionate about, placing him in a strong position for long-term success within the hospitality industry.”
