Road to recovery – Andy’s story

Road to recovery – Andy’s story

After years of running his own kitchen, Andy’s life took an unexpected and devastating turn. The intense pressures of work and personal life eventually led to a breakdown and a heart attack, forcing him to walk away from the career he loved. As he focused on recovery and slowly rebuilt his strength, Andy was referred to the Restart Scheme for support in finding a path back into employment.

Employment Adviser, Shantelle shared: “When I got to know Andy it was clear that the impact of the past few years had left both emotional and professional scars. His confidence was low; things were challenging at home. Yet from the very first appointment, Andy showed remarkable determination. He attended every session offered to him, embraced each opportunity wholeheartedly, and demonstrated a genuine readiness to change his situation.

“Through open and honest conversations, it became clear that rebuilding Andy’s confidence was priority. Andy engaged with several of our inhouse courses: Self Confidence, Transferable Skills, and Resilience, all of which helped him refocus, recognise his strengths, and rebuild his self-belief. Andy worked closely with our Wellbeing for Work team, completing Mood Management sessions that equipped him with essential tools to better navigate emotional challenges.”

Wellbeing support is a key part of the Restart Scheme’s personalised approach offering participants structured help to overcome deeper challenges such as low confidence, anxiety, stress, and emotional fatigue.

Shantelle explained: “We then turned our attention to employment, where we explored other career opportunities and job sectors. Andy was keen to get back into the kitchen, as it’s what he loved and felt he had built his career on.

“Together we created a new CV that put a spotlight on his experience, skills and potential. Andy absorbed every piece of guidance, putting it into practice with enthusiasm. His positive spirit made him a joy to support, and everyone he met was struck by his energy, determination, and ability to find the bright side even in difficult moments.”

“We arranged an interview with a prospective employer, and although Andy was offered the role, the opportunity ultimately fell through, leaving him deeply disappointed. But despite the setback, Andy kept going, and remained focused, and open to opportunities.

“Andy’s perseverance soon paid off and following an application, he was immediately recognised for his passion, talent, and authenticity. They invited him to interview and were impressed by his positivity and skill and quickly offered him a role. Since then, Andy has thrived as a line cook, rediscovering his love for food, embracing teamwork, and becoming the resident expert in pizza making. The stability of work has helped him rebuild confidence, strengthen personal relationships, and regain joy in everyday life.”
