Restart journey – Renelle’s story

Renelle was referred to the Restart Scheme by her Jobcentre Plus work coach. During her initial appointment, she met with Employment Adviser, Jamie who got to know her and her situation a bit more to create a plan of action together.

Renelle told us: “When I joined the Restart Scheme, that’s when everything changed. From the very beginning, I felt seen, heard, and genuinely supported. The team recognised my drive and worked with me, which made a big difference and supported me with the foundations.”

Better Off Calculators are there for participants on the Restart Scheme; to provide an insight into how much they can potentially earn from the hours they work. This can support participants with budgeting and assessing their outgoings.

Initially, Renelle was determined to improve her CV, and with Jamie’s support they created a gold standard CV ready to begin using with new job applications. Together they explored various job sectors and identified the type of roles that Renelle wanted to pursue.

“Jamie was incredibly supportive; he took time to listen and connected me with the right people in their team. They really helped reassure me that finding the right job was possible. The team gave me so much great advice and encouragement whenever I had an interview coming up, which really boosted my confidence”, said Renelle.

“During one of the workshops I attended, we created things like expenses sheet, and a five-year plan. These tools are still being used in my everyday life. That long-term focus really stuck with me.

Like Renelle, participants are supported financially by the Restart Scheme with travel costs, interview clothing and workwear to ensure that the transition into employment doesn’t affect them financially.

“I applied for a role with a local housing company and was invited to interview. I went for it… and got it! Now I’m working full-time and I’m really enjoying it, I’ve even had the chance to help with other teams and exploring new roles within the organisation.

“I just want to say a huge thank you to Jamie, and everyone at the Restart Scheme who helped me through this process. Your support made all the difference!”
