Promoted after a month – Stephanie’s story
Upon joining the Restart Scheme, Stephanie had been unemployed for several months as her self-employed job as a German translator had come to an end. Stephanie lacked clear job goals and felt that her age of 58 would work against her.
She met with Employment Adviser, Mark, who discussed her previous work experience and assessed any existing skills that she could transfer into a new job role. With a wealth of work experience in the retail and hospitality job sectors, Stephanie felt that she would benefit from our in-house courses to get used to engaging with others after her period of unemployment.
Mark explained: “Stephanie struggled with her hearing and arthritis which affected her confidence around others and caused anxiety for her when searching for jobs or meeting potential employers.
“We began by enrolling her onto several of our in-house employability courses - Interview Skills, CV Reboot, Money Management and Digital Skills, where she was learning with others who had similar barriers to work, in a group environment. Stephanie attended and grew in confidence with each one.
“The Restart Scheme provided Stephanie with a tablet to continue her job search at home, and she was able to put her new digital skills to use following her course.”
In the meantime, she secured interviews and while she was initially unsuccessful, she learnt from them and gained confidence in applying for other roles. Stephanie attended a Restart Scheme jobs fair and applied for a housekeeping role at the largest hotel in Scarborough. Having the opportunity to meet with the employer face to face during the jobs fair gave Stephanie the advantage with her application, and she was offered the job.
Just over a month after starting her new role, Stephanie was promoted to Housekeeping Supervisor!
Stephanie told us: “Time goes by so quickly when I’m working. I am so grateful to the Restart Scheme; I wouldn’t have got this job if it hadn’t been for their support.”
