Progression and success – Maria’s story

Progression and success – Maria’s story

Maria joined the Restart Scheme ready to make a change and overcome the barriers that she felt had previously held her back from finding work. From the first appointment, Maria and her Employment Adviser, Daniela, worked together to outline her career goals and develop a clear action plan on how to reach them.

Maria explained that nervousness and anxiety during interviews had become a barrier for her. Daniela began by supporting her with essential employability tasks: updating her CV, creating a tailored cover letter, and identifying her transferable skills. Together, they focused on strengthening her interview techniques using the Civil Service Success Profiles framework, allowing her to develop strong, structured responses.

Daniela said: “Maria continued practising these examples independently at home. I was able to support Maria with vouchers for smart interview clothes, and we began to practice in mock interviews.

“This provided Maria with a safe space to practice and build on her confidence, although interview opportunities were coming through regularly, her nerves would often take over. I spent additional time coaching Maria through managing her emotions, recognising her strengths, and staying composed during interviews.”

Like Maria, many participants benefit from the range of in-house courses available on the Restart scheme. This includes opportunities to attend one-to-one or group sessions and meet likeminded people to build on their employability skills whilst building confidence in themselves and in social settings.

Transferable skills, proactivity, and interview techniques are just some of the courses that Maria completed during her time with the Restart Scheme. Maria told us: “These courses helped me to refine my communication, self-presentation, and overall interview performance.”

Maria’s hard work, persistence, and willingness to grow soon paid off, leading to a full-time job offer with the NHS. Daniela and the team continue to support her as she settles into her new role, including helping with childcare costs until she receives her first full month’s wage.

“Maria’s journey shows the power of determination and, combined with the right support her progress has been remarkable. I am incredibly proud of everything she has achieved”, said Daniela.

Congratulations, Maria – best of luck in your new role and for the future!
