First break - Jack’s story

At 20, Jack was eager to find a role that matched his interests, skills, and long-term career goals. After nearly a year of searching for the right opportunity, and with limited work experience he was referred to the Restart Scheme by his Jobcentre Plus Work Coach.

Jack was supported from the beginning by Employment Advisor Jamie, and over 15 weeks, he was provided consistent guidance and motivation, while also being connected to valuable contacts and training delivered in-house.

Like Jack, many participants benefit from our interview skills courses that are delivered in-house. These courses equip participants with practical tools and techniques to approach interviews with confidence, while addressing knowledge gaps and preparing them for real-world opportunities.

Jamie told us: “From our first appointment, Jack admitted to feeling nervous, and it quickly became clear that he felt he was in a safe, supportive space where his personal and professional growth genuinely mattered. Throughout the programme, Jack felt comfortable raising questions, discussing concerns, and exploring different education and administrative career pathways.”

In addition to employment support, Jamie provided practical assistance, and interview clothing to help Jack feel confident and present himself professionally, as well as a travel reimbursement to support his transition from benefits into paid work.

With mock interviews and practice questions, Jack secured a full-time role as an Administrator. Most importantly, this opportunity gave him renewed confidence, enabling him to move forward in his career free from self-doubt, anxiety, and stress.

The Restart Scheme offers optional in‑work support to help participants settle in and succeed as they transition into employment. Ongoing check-ins, tailored advice, and access to further training ensure continued development, progression, and long-term job retention.
