New direction - Wayne’s story

When Wayne joined the Restart Scheme, he was motivated but uncertain about where to begin. After years of running his own printing business, Wayne was ready for a fresh start. He’d built strong skills in customer service, budgeting and problem-solving, but translating that experience into a compelling CV felt like a challenge.
The Restart Scheme helps participants with their change of direction by turning existing skills into new opportunities. With tailored support, participants build confidence, adapt their experience, and successfully transition into new career sectors.
At his first appointment, Wayne met Employment Adviser Harry to discuss his experience and career goals. Harry said: “Wayne had handled everything from daily operations to long-term planning but didn’t recognise these as skills - just part of the job. I reassured him they were valuable transferable strengths. Together, we identified these and created a professional, high-quality CV to showcase them.
“As we explored his experience, it became clear how valuable Wayne’s background was. We focused on interview techniques and mock practice, helping him turn real business examples into clear, confident answers. His confidence grew quickly, leading to multiple interviews - and eventually a job offer where his initiative, independence and real-world experience were truly valued.”
Like Wayne, many participants benefit from our in-house courses that provide focused sessions on improving areas like transferrable skills, self-confidence, interview skills, and more.
After waiting for the right opportunity, Wayne applied for a role in retail - an environment suited to his strengths. He was soon offered a position with a well-known DIY retailer, recognising his practical experience and strong work ethic.
Wayne is now settling into his new role, using the same dedication and professionalism that helped him succeed in his own business. We wish him all the best in this next chapter of his career and for the future!
