New computer skills – Michael’s story
When Michael joined the Restart Scheme and attended his first job searching session, it was identified that further support with IT skills, job applications and CV work were needed. "I’d been out of work for almost five months, and felt I wasn’t moving forward”, said Michael, who told his Employment Adviser, Louise, how he often felt vulnerable due to his learning difficulties and IT skills, and that he often needed help and support when trying to undertake basic tasks on a computer.
With support from Louise, Michael was able to complete employment preparation courses, which ranged from targeted job search, and attending Restart Scheme group sessions that were aimed to help likeminded people in a group setting. The sessions focused support with online job applications, sending emails, replying to emails, and gaining a better overall understanding of using computers.
Louise told us: “Michael often called us to see if he could come into the office for assistance with job applications and sending his CV with a tailored cover letter to support. It was a pleasure to support Michael, as he engaged well with myself and the rest of the team.
“Michael has a positive attitude towards finding work and is open to ideas and job opportunities presented to him, and I knew it wouldn’t be long before he found the right job.”
Louise worked closely with Michael to create a new CV and determine his job goals, identifying his existing skills and experiences, and discussing how he could transfer these into something he really wanted to do. Michael soon decided that he wanted to pursue a career in a kitchen environment, and given his previous work experience in catering, he felt confident in this sector.
Each of our Restart Scheme offices has an Employment Hub, which provides access to job-search facilities, computers, phones, and local job boards. We have the most up to date vacancies and labour market advice from our local recruitment managers.
During his session, Michael found an ideal kitchen porter role at a local hotel, so together with Louise they worked through the application form. Just a few days later, Michael was invited for an interview and short work trial, after which the manager offered him the job on the same day!
Louise shared: “I am happy to see how far Michael has progressed on his job search journey, and to see the positive changes in his confidence and mind set. I’ve spoken to Michael and his new employer, and they are both happy with how things are going which is great news. Michael has since told me how much he feels this new job has turned his life around for the better.
Executive Chef, Paul told us: “Michael’s a canny lad, and cracks on with his job.”
“We wish him the very best for the future”, said Louise, on behalf of the team at the Restart Scheme in Jarrow.
