Long term goals - Paul’s story

When Paul joined the Restart Scheme, he had been unemployed for over two years and needed support in reaching his long-term job goal of working in construction.
During his initial appointment with Employment Adviser, Ryan, they got to know each other and were able to discuss his current situation, previous experience, and future job goals. Having emerged from a challenging period in his life while caring for his family, Paul remained determined to create a brighter future for both them and himself.
Ryan shared: “Paul had a clear long-term goal, to work in the construction industry, so we were able to enrol him onto a CSCS course, covering the cost whilst supporting him along the way. However, the complexities of self-employment, and studying towards trades qualifications became more of a long-term goal, whilst he set himself up initially to become financially independent.”
Our Better Off Calculation tool gives participants an insight into the money they can earn based on the hours worked. The Restart Scheme also offers financial support, to ensure that our participants transition into sustainable work does not negatively impact them financially.
With the support of Ryan and the team, Paul received tailored guidance and encouragement. He attended revision sessions and was booked in for his CSCS exam. At the same time, he worked closely with Ryan to shift his mindset around employment, focusing on securing stable income to fund his future ambitions of starting his own construction firm.
Paul remained open-minded in his job search, understanding the importance of being financially better off in the short term. He participated in interview skills workshops, mock interviews, and worked with Recruitment Manager, Alice to explore opportunities in retail, cleaning, and hospitality.
This proactive approach paid off, and Paul secured a part-time cleaning role at a local holiday resort. Paul’s dedication and reliability led to increased hours, improving his financial situation and boosting his confidence.
The support from Restart Scheme doesn’t stop once our participants find work. We offer in-work support for their first six months at work, to ensure their transition is as smooth as possible.
“Ryan and Alice have been really helpful throughout; they have listened to my concerns and my job goals and have been there for any job concerns I have. My new job has given me the confidence to develop my working career.” Said Paul.
The new job role has provided Paul with a much-needed routine and a renewed sense of purpose. He is now applying for additional roles within the resort to further his experiences and increase his hours. Now that Paul has his CSCS card on the horizon and a clear path toward his construction goals, he is well on his way to building the future he envisioned.
