Light at the end of COVID-19 tunnel - Phillip's story

Phillip was referred to the Restart Scheme after being made redundant due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although Phillip came to us with a friendly and professional approach, he needed our support to get himself mentally and physically ‘job-ready’.

Our Employment Adviser, Sam, explained:

“We referred Phillip to Working Minds where he received counselling and therapy. They really helped Phillip overcome some of the mental barriers that had held him back for so long. It was rewarding to see how much more motivated he was and how this built his confidence back up!”

Following Working Minds’ support, Sam worked together with Phillip to create a CV, focusing on his previous experience in retail and his key strengths. We were also pleased to be able to support him with interview skills, self-confidence, and job applications through our in-house training courses.

Phillip is now employed at Go Outdoors retail store, working part-time, which he is enjoying. We keep in touch with Phillip through our in-work support calls and he remains happy and content with his role.

When asked about future aspirations, Phillip stated: “My future plans are to go into full time hours and eventually progress into a supervisor or management role.”

Phillip told us:

“Sam, has understood me and my situation throughout my participation on the Restart Scheme.

"Sam was never pushy or forceful and helped me conquer my mental health struggles to end up in the place that I am in today. I can confidently say that I’m in a better place both physically and mentally thanks to the Restart Scheme.”
