Homelessness to hope – Arthur’s story

When Arthur joined the Restart Scheme, he was homeless and struggling with his mental wellbeing. During his initial appointment with his Employment Adviser, Susanna, he explained that his ‘future felt uncertain’.
Identifying his living arrangements as priority, Susanna arranged emergency accommodation and referred Arthur to Shelter, giving him the stability to start rebuilding his life. With help from Shelter, Peabody, and the Restart Scheme, Arthur later secured a place to call home. Susanna said: “This gave Arthur his independence back, and from there we slowly began working together to build his confidence, with becoming ‘job ready’ as his end goal.
“Arthur stayed committed, attending every appointment and engaging in job workshops.”
The Restart Scheme offers in-house courses designed to equip participants with essential employability skills. From CV writing and job applications to interview techniques and workplace confidence, these practical sessions provide tailored support to help individuals succeed in today’s job market and transition smoothly into sustainable employment.
Arthur told us:
“I really benefitted from Susanna’s guidance, especially with my CV. I didn’t realise a CV should be limited to two pages and only include the last 10 years of work history. Susanna constantly encouraged and supported me throughout my time at the Restart Scheme. The coaching really helped my confidence, and I wouldn’t have been able to do the CV on my own.”
Susanna supported Arthur with enrolment and covered the costs of a security course, enabling him to successfully obtain his SIA badge.
Like Arthur, many participants benefit from financial support through the Restart Scheme, from travel costs to work clothing, ensuring the move from benefits to employment is financially stress-free.
During his time with the Restart Scheme, Arthur benefited from interview training and mock interviews, helping him showcase his transferable skills. After nine months, he is now employed and thriving in his new job. Arthur said:
“If I could recommend the Restart Scheme to anyone, I would!”
