Finding new confidence – Michael’s story
Whilst Michael had limited experience of paid employment before, he was referred to the Restart Scheme, he had volunteered in various roles to build up his work experience and skillset. We spoke to Michael’s Employment Adviser, Amy, about Michael’s journey on the service which ultimately led to his first paid job!
Amy told us: “Myself and Michael identified the potential barriers of his transition into employment: lack of self-confidence, struggling to complete application forms, and his interview skills. Michael talked about his autism with us and shared how this influenced his existing barriers so that we could create a suitable action plan for him moving forward.
“Michael’s hard work and determination paid off and he was inundated with a flurry of interviews from local employers such as B&M and TK Maxx. Suited and booted with his new interview clothes which were provided for him, he attended each interview excited and well prepared. Unfortunately, Michael experienced a few setbacks with his first set of interviews, however he reached out for feedback on these which helped him improve for his next one.
“Michael applied for a role with Travelex at Asda, utilising the advice and guidance received in the application forms session that we offer on the Restart Scheme. He was invited for an interview, where he used the feedback, he had been given previously, and was given a job offer for the role of Travel Service Partner.
“Having successfully completed his first week at work, Michael is now looking at his next challenge of moving out of supported living and making a mark on a place of his own. Michael continues to have regular appointments with his adviser as part of the Restart Scheme’s in-work support, to ensure he has a smooth transition with his new role.
“I am incredibly proud of Michael and what he has achieved this year. At times it has been difficult due to the setback he has faced; however, this hasn’t once affected his enthusiasm and great sense of humour.”
