Rebuilding my career – Liovet’s story

“After moving to England in 2010, I focused on raising my children as a single mother while working in part-time roles. Although I was a qualified solicitor in Cuba, years away from my profession affected my confidence. As my children grew more independent, I decided to rebuild my career and pursue requalifying as a solicitor - leading me to join the Restart Scheme for guidance and a fresh start.”

With tailored guidance, it helps individuals find flexible employment that fits around their responsibilities, ensuring a realistic and sustainable return to work.

“I met with my Employment Adviser Malaaha and gained far more than job search support - the Restart Scheme gave me structure, confidence, and direction.

“My main barrier prior to joining was low confidence, limited understanding of the UK job market and digital skills. Through the Restart Scheme, I was able to improve my CV, strengthen job applications and gain the skills to communicate and interview with confidence by completing several of their in-house courses.

“Malaaha played a key role in my progress, offering one-to-one support and helping me recognise my strengths, and guiding my applications with honest feedback. The team created a supportive environment that encouraged my growth.

“I enrolled to the Administration Pathway and was supported with updating my CV to highlight relevant legal and property experience. With this support I secured a role as a Pre-Tenancy and Compliance Coordinator with an estate agent, giving me financial stability, renewed confidence and a clear direction, whilst setting a positive example for my children.”

The Restart Scheme supports individuals in transitioning into paid employment by removing financial barriers to work. In Liovet’s case, this included help with travel costs, providing a mobile phone and SIM card and funding interview and work clothing. This practical support ensures a smoother, more accessible route into employment and financial independence.
