Determined to succeed - Moses’s story

When Moses joined the Restart Scheme, he was focused on improving his English skills to enhance his employment prospects. As English was not his first language, he felt this was a key barrier to finding work. Determined to improve his opportunities, Moses committed to developing his language skills while actively working towards securing employment.

The Restart Scheme supports participants to build confidence, improve workplace communication, and integrate into their local communities through tailored support. In-house courses such as English for Work, alongside personalised coaching and employability workshops, help participants develop the skills needed to secure sustainable employment.

During Moses’s initial appointment with Employment Adviser Naz, they explored his barriers to work, existing skills and experience, and future career goals. To support his development, Moses enrolled on our in-house English for Work course, where he strengthened his workplace communication skills and grew in confidence. The course provided a strong foundation for both his language development and his journey towards employment.

Naz said: “What stood out most about Moses was his determination. At every appointment, he spoke openly about his goal of finding work, not only for himself but to provide for his family. Even when faced with challenges, his motivation never wavered and continued to drive him forward.”

Moses initially struggled with online job searching, so whilst working with the team to improve his digital skills, he took a proactive approach to physically hand out copies of his CV to employers in person. Alongside this, weekly appointments provided structured support with job applications, helping him gradually develop essential employability skills.

From interview preparation, mock interviews and coaching techniques to practical financial support that eases the transition from benefits into paid work, the Restart Scheme equips participants with the skills, guidance and reassurance needed to succeed.

Practical support extended beyond job applications and interviews. To build Moses’ independence and confidence when travelling, he received guidance on using tools such as Google Maps, helping him navigate journeys to interviews and workplaces with confidence.

Naz said: “Through persistence, teamwork and a personalised approach, Moses achieved a significant breakthrough. He successfully attended an interview for a Cleaning Operative role and was offered the position - a milestone that represents not just employment, but greater stability, independence and hope for both Moses and his family.”
