Confidence restored - Martin’s story

Martin joined the Restart Scheme, delivered by our supply chain partners Northumberland County Council, after a prolonged period of unemployment that had begun to affect both his confidence and mental wellbeing. Despite having more than ten years of administration and customer service experience, time away from work created a cycle where declining confidence made it increasingly difficult to get back into employment.

Through personalised employability support, the Restart Scheme helps participants build confidence, develop workplace skills and prepare for every stage of the job search. By ensuring individuals are job ready before entering employment, we support them to secure sustainable roles where they can thrive and progress.

Determined to secure an administration-based role, Martin worked closely with his Employment Adviser, Gail, to strengthen his CV, build his confidence and prepare himself for interviews. This tailored support helped him to showcase his experience in customer service, administration, data management and stakeholder communication to prospective employers.

Gail told us: “Through ongoing encouragement, mock interviews and practical job search guidance, Martin gradually rebuilt his confidence and became more positive about his employment prospects. As his confidence grew, so did his ability to present his skills effectively and compete for opportunities that matched his experience.

“Martin's hard work and determination paid off when he successfully secured a role as an Administrative Assistant with Northumberland County Council. Martin now provides vital support to social workers and managers across the region.

“The role has had a transformative impact on Martin's life. Alongside providing financial stability and long-term career prospects, securing employment enabled Martin to move into his own home, an important personal milestone that has given him greater independence and security.”
