Confidence booster – Rory’s story

When Rory joined the Restart Scheme, he explained how he had been finding job applications difficult, and that he couldn’t seem to get to interview stage.

During his initial appointment, he met with Employment Adviser, Angela, who took time getting to know him, his experience, and future employment goals. Rory discussed that his main barrier when applying for jobs is his dyslexia, and he previously pressured himself into finding work, but receiving little to no response was affecting his mood and creating anxiety.

Angela told us: “I introduced Rory to our Restart Scheme Employer Services Team, who have contacts amongst local employers. The team discuss specific barriers that participants have and together they adapt the application process so that it suits the individual needs of the participant.”

Rory worked with Paul from the Employer Services Team, and together they explored different job roles that were suitable during a job matching session. Whilst attending the office, Rory regularly met with Angela to review his progress and to check in on how he was getting on. Rory felt ready to begin updating his CV, and Angela was on hand to assist him in creating a gold standard CV, ready to start applying for the jobs he had found with Paul.

Rory had found a couple of customer service based roles, and through a contact of Paul’s they managed to arrange a trial shift and interview for one of them.

Paul shared: “Rory’s work trial and interview went fantastic, and he was offered a job on completion of training. As the training was in depth, Rory came into the office to use the facilities and we we’re able to provide additional support in this.”

After six months working in the role, we have heard from the employer: “Rory is a great team member, and we love having him on board with us. We have seen a massive improvement in his confidence and have been increasing his responsibilities over the last few months, as management are now looking at development for Rory in the future.”

Rory shared: “I’ve enjoyed all the support from the team at Restart. They’ve helped me to sort my CV, and improved my confidence which all helped me when getting my job!”
