Catering career – Steve’s story
Steve joined the Restart Scheme after a long period of unemployment, with a passion to start a career in hospitality and catering.
Upon joining, he met with Employment Adviser, Shelley, and was able to discuss his career goals, situation, and any concerns. Shelley told us:
“Steve expressed his concerns around not finding work immediately after completing his professional cookery qualification. He also felt that because working in a kitchen is a physically demanding job, that employers may look at a person’s age when recruiting.”
Our teams of experienced Employment Advisers are always up to date with the latest job vacancies in the area, and our Recruitment Managers have strong working relationships with local employers.
Shelley and Steve worked together to update his CV to a high standard, and practiced interview skills ready for when the time came. Steve completed several of the in-house courses delivered by the Restart Scheme, and benefitted from confidence building, working as a group, and attending hospitality and catering routeway sessions.
Steve told us: “I was able to complete a Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety course, and purchase some kitchen shoes, which the Restart Scheme paid for. I completed a two-day work trial and had mock interviews that prepared me for the real thing.”
Like Steve, many participants on the Restart Scheme benefit from funding that eases them into work. The Restart Scheme ensures that participants are not financially impacted by transitioning from benefits into paid employment.
“We wish Steve all the best in his new career in the kitchen.” Said Shelley.
