Career switch success - Daniel’s story

Daniel was referred to the Restart Scheme, delivered by our partners at Northern Rights for support with journey back into employment. With a strong background in IT, Daniel was keen to explore alternative job sectors for his next career move.
The Restart Scheme supports participants looking to change careers by helping them identify and build on their transferable skills. Through tailored guidance and training, individuals are empowered to explore new sectors and confidently move into roles that align with their strengths and goals.
During his initial appointment, Daniel met with Employment Adviser, Derek, who worked closely with him to determine his future job goals, whilst creating an action plan together to help him achieve this. Together they created a gold standard CV that highlights his transferrable skills and experiences in the best way possible.
Derek completed a Better Off Calculation for Daniel, to give insight into his potential earnings working both full and part-time hours. Not only did this highlight the practical benefits but also reignited Daniel’s motivation, giving him a renewed sense of purpose and optimism about his future going forward.
Daniel used his new CV to begin applying for jobs in the retail sector and attended our in-house jobs club where a vacancy at a DIY store was shared with him. This was something he was keen on, and so with the support of Derek he submitted his application. In the meantime, Derek arranged mock interviews to help Daniel develop and refine his interview skills, techniques, and answers.
Just a few days later, Daniel was invited to interview, where he was then offered the job! Derek told us:

The Restart Scheme offers ongoing in-work support to help participants settle into employment and sustain their roles. This includes practical guidance alongside financial assistance, such as help with travel, clothing, or equipment costs. Together, this support ensures a smoother transition from benefits into paid employment.
Northern Rights provided Daniel with vouchers to purchase new work boots, and all travel expenses were covered to further support his progression into employment.
