Career shift - Jason’s story

When Jason joined the Restart Scheme, he explained that a redundancy and family bereavement had led him to leave his previous role as a forklift driver. After some time out of work, he found the application and interview process challenging but remained motivated to return to employment.

Jason met with his Employment Adviser Michael, who got to know him and his job goals at their initial appointment. Michael said: “From the start, Jason demonstrated a positive attitude and strong engagement, bringing with him valuable experience in forklift driving, retail, and as a self‑employed Paint Technician. Jason held a valid Forklift Truck (FLT) licence and expressed a strong interest in returning to a warehouse role, whilst exploring other job sectors.

The Restart Scheme provides in-house facilities where participants can use phones, computers, and printing equipment to support their job search. These resources create a comfortable, accessible space for completing applications, updating CVs, and managing interview preparation with ease.

Jason attended our Jobs Club and received support with updating his CV, highlighting all his transferrable skills and previous work experience. He then used this to register with recruitment agencies and begin applying for jobs.

Michael shared: “These workshops helped Jason build confidence in articulating his strengths and experiences. Jason engaged positively throughout, and was recommended for a Passenger Assist role, which aligned well with his caring nature and previous driving experience. He showed strong interest and genuine enthusiasm for supporting individuals in a customer‑focused setting.”

Our Recruitment Managers have early access to upcoming vacancies through our partnerships with local employers, allowing them to quickly match participants to suitable roles as soon as opportunities arise.

Michael supported Jason’s application and interview preparation through mock sessions, helping him practice key questions and techniques. He also provided vouchers for Jason to purchase smart interview clothing, ensuring he could both look and feel confident on the day.

“Jason was successful, impressing the employer with his professional, caring approach, and relevant experience. He was offered the position and completed all required pre‑employment assessments, including driving and First Aid evaluations, ensuring he was fully prepared for the role,” said Michael.

“He has transitioned smoothly into the role and demonstrated consistent commitment to meeting expectations. His journey highlights not only his willingness to engage with support, but also his openness to exploring new career pathways. I am extremely proud of Jason’s progress and the dedication he has shown throughout his time on the Restart Scheme.”
