Career on track - Wayne’s story

After moving to the UK from Mauritius, 20-year-old Wayne was determined to find work quickly to support himself and his family. Prior to joining the Restart Scheme, he explored opportunities independently but found himself in roles that offered little financial security.

From building confidence to overcoming barriers, the Restart Scheme supports people of all backgrounds and experience levels to progress into sustainable employment.

During his initial appointment with his Employment Adviser, Claire, he felt at ease and able to discuss his long- and short-term career plans. Wayne was introduced to a training opportunity that offered a two-week course and the chance to interview for a Production Operative role with a local food supplier.

With support from Claire and the team, Wayne successfully completed the registration process, attended the training course, and secured a job at the end. His determination and positive attitude shone throughout, and he remained fully engaged every step of the way.

With his start date approaching, Wayne faced one final challenge: finding a reliable way to commute to work. Determined to make a success of his new role, he reached out to the team for support. Claire was on hand to provide Wayne with a bike and all the necessary safety equipment, ensuring he could travel to work safely and confidently.

The Restart Scheme continues to provide tailored in-work support for up to six months. From travel and work-related costs to onboarding support and guidance, the programme helps participants settle into their new role, overcome challenges, and make a successful transition into sustainable employment.

Reflecting on the support he received, Wayne said: “It feels like my birthday, I am so grateful to Claire and the Restart Scheme.”
