Career in teaching – Nana’s story

Nana was introduced to the Restart Scheme through her Work Coach at Jobcentre Plus.

“From my first appointment with Jamie, we discussed the ways in which I would be supported into work and following my career goals. It was at this point I knew the future was looking brighter and I was hopeful of what was to come.

“Jamie took the time to listen, understanding my interests, skills, ambitions and experiences. I am a single mum of three and have been out of work for over seven years. My goal is to find employment with support of the Restart Scheme, to set an example for my children by creating routine and following a career.

Together Jamie and Nana explored the childcare options available and any eligible government funding that she could access whilst working.

Our team of experienced Employment Advisers work with their participants to create an individual action plan that focuses on their goals, taking their personal situation into account. Our Better Off Calculator tool provides insight into how better off participants will be from working full and part-time hours.

“Jamie enrolled me onto several of their in-house training courses which included employer taster days, and education sector events. Even though I had experience from university and a degree, I lacked the courage, and experience of job searching, going for job interviews and the whole process of getting back into work.

“I currently have a level 3 and SEN teaching qualifications, so the sector employment days were useful and benefitted me on my job search journey. I was offered financial support with travel costs and given vouchers for work clothes by the Restart Scheme.

The Restart Scheme is closely connected to local employers who regularly host sector taster days for our participants. Their partnership with our Skills Academy offers sector routeways, and external sector training, which our Executive Coaches are on hand to support professionals and graduates.

“After just a few months with Jamie and the team at Restart, they have helped me tremendously in achieving my personal goals, development and professional growth. I am now working full time as a SEN Teaching assistant, also referred to as Learning Support Specialist, at a SEN school.”

“I am forever grateful to the Restart Scheme for this opportunity. Special thanks to my Employment Adviser, Jamie, for all his support, guidance, and encouragement.”
