Career in care - Stacie’s story

Stacie was referred to the Restart Scheme for guidance and support as she began her journey into employment. At just 19 years old, she found that her limited work experience had become a significant barrier, creating a cycle in which she struggled to secure opportunities that would allow her to build that very experience.

The Restart Scheme supports individuals with little to no work experience by providing tailored guidance, practical skills training and access to funded opportunities that help build confidence and employability. Through dedicated support, participants are empowered to overcome barriers and take their first steps into sustainable employment.

During her initial appointment she met with her Employment Adviser, Sophia, who took the time to get to know her interests and any skills and background that would support her next steps with finding work. Sophia worked closely with Stacie to create an action plan with realistic targets that would help her reach the end goal of finding sustainable work.

Stacie did not have a valid right-to-work document, so Sophia provided immediate support and prioritised the renewal of her passport, which was funded through the Restart Scheme. With Sophia’s guidance, Stacie decided to pursue a career in care and with this, Sophia took the appropriate steps to apply for a DBS in preparation for her transition into work.

Sophia enrolled Stacie onto several of our in-house courses that focused on budgeting finances, interview skills and techniques, along with sector taster days.

Like in Stacie’s experience, our sector taster days are crucial in helping participants to determine the career path they wanted to pursue, as they provide participants with insight into what they can expect from the different roles in specific sectors.

Stacie participated in mock interviews with Sophia and the team and was also provided with vouchers to purchase smart clothing for upcoming interviews - helping her not only look the part but feel confident too.

Sophia shared: “Stacie consistently attended her weekly appointments and participated in job clubs with the team and I, making the most of every opportunity available to her. Stacie’s proactive approach and determination have now paid off, as she prepares to begin an exciting new role within the care sector.”

Reflecting on her journey, Stacie told us: “I am looking forward to starting my new position and making a positive difference to the lives of others.”
