Breaking barriers - Sam’s story

Breaking barriers - Sam’s story

When Sam joined the Restart Scheme, he was motivated and eager to secure a role in administration. Although he had a positive attitude and a clear career goal, several barriers were impacting his progress. Sam had limited recent experience in the sector, lacked a professional CV that effectively showcased his skills, and was unable to provide valid right-to-work documentation due to an expired passport.

As a result, he required tailored support to strengthen his employability, build his confidence, and help him take the next steps towards sustainable employment.

The Restart Scheme helps people overcome barriers to employment through personalised coaching, skills development, and practical support. By building confidence and improving job readiness, the programme supports participants into sustainable, long-term employment.

Working closely with his Employment Adviser Daniel, Sam reviewed his career goals, strengths, and barriers to employment. Together, they created a tailored action plan, including a sector-specific CV for administration roles that showcased his transferable skills and improved his prospects with employers.

To build his skills and confidence, Sam attended our Administration Pathway Day and Careers Fair, gaining valuable insight into local opportunities and employer expectations. Sam completed a session with one of our national account employers Spicerhaart for an application session, helping him to strengthen his applications and develop a better understanding of the recruitment process.

Daniel and the team provided one-to-one guidance on using LinkedIn effectively and tailoring applications to maximise his chances of success. Recruitment Manager Sadie, also supported Sam with interview preparation, including practice questions and techniques, ahead of an opportunity for a Dispatch Operative role with Spicerhaart.

To further strengthen his employability, Sam completed a QuickBooks course and gained recognised bookkeeping qualifications, enhancing his suitability for both administrative and finance-related roles. Daniel also secured funding to renew Sam’s passport, ensuring he had valid right-to-work documentation, and provided vouchers for smart workwear, helping him feel interview ready.

Daniel shared: “Sam’s commitment and hard work was rewarded when he secured an interview for the Dispatch Operative position with Spicerhaart and was offered the role just a few days later.”

Journeys like Sam’s demonstrate how personalised support, practical assistance, and targeted skills development can help people overcome barriers to employment. Through the Restart Scheme, participants gain confidence, build valuable skills, and move closer to sustainable, long-term careers.
