Back on track - Stuart’s story

After a challenging period out of work due to burnout, Stuart was determined to move forward and rebuild his career. Despite having extensive maintenance experience and a strong employment background, he struggled to demonstrate the full value of his skills to employers. Seeking guidance and a fresh perspective, he joined the Restart Scheme, ready to take the next step back into sustainable employment.

Working closely with his Employment Adviser, Harry, it quickly became clear that Stuart, now in his sixties, had a wealth of maintenance experience that was not fully reflected in his CV. Despite a strong employment history and extensive practical knowledge, his existing CV did little to showcase his skills, achievements, and industry expertise. Together, they completely redesigned the document, creating a professional and engaging CV that highlighted his strengths and presented his experience in a way that employers could immediately recognise and value.

To help remove practical barriers, Restart Scheme provided support with travel costs, to enable Stuart to attend interviews without financial pressure. Although he was unsuccessful at a couple of interviews, he remained focused and resilient. Through tailored interview preparation, practical advice, and constructive feedback, Stuart continued to build his confidence and improve his interview performance.

Alongside interview support, Stuart received guidance on DBS requirements and employment law, helping him navigate recruitment processes with confidence. As he moved into work, Harry provided vouchers for PPE, workwear, and essential tools, ensuring he was fully equipped for his new role.
