Adapting to change – Robert’s story

Robert was referred to the Restart Scheme by his Work Coach at Jobcentre Plus, for further support with his job search and to explore a new career path. He had previously worked at Focus DIY before branching out to start his own successful gardening business.

Robert had to eventually take time off from his gardening business due to ill health which made it difficult for him to carry out manual activity with gardening. Whilst re-evaluating his career options, he joined the Restart Scheme and met with Employment Adviser, Angela.

Angela was able to positively cover all the other job sectors to which Robert could transfer his existing skills, and together they were able to filter down any suitable roles in which Robert would like to pursue. Robert showed interest in becoming a HGV driver and following his research on this sector, Angela referred him to a connected provider for a HGV course, which the Restart Scheme was able to fund, and he then took the steps needed to obtain his Class 2 driving license.

Angela told us:

“A referral was made to a local HGV training provider and Robert started a few weeks later, he has since qualified and completed a range of practical and classroom-based learning. Robert’s hard work and determination has played a huge part in obtaining the licenses and certificates needed to successfully start his new career. Robert has now gained a level 2 in HGV driving along with a digital tachograph card, which was all fully funded.”

Robert worked with Angela to update his CV, in a way which would accurately reflect all of his achievements, and tailor it to be competitive for the roles he wanted to apply for. Robert found a job online as a refuse class 2 driver for the local council, and applied straight away with guidance from Angela. He was invited to an induction just two days later, resulting in a job start the following day!
