A better future – Julie’s story

Julie was referred to the Restart Scheme after a break from her long‑term job left her uncertain about how to restart her job search. Julie shared:
“After working for the same employer for a long time, I found myself unemployed. It took me nearly three years to get back into work due to the various barriers I was facing. During this time, I struggled with motivation and didn’t have the support I needed to move forward. Jobcentre Plus recommended I join the Restart Scheme, and that’s when things started to change.”
During her initial appointment, she met with Employment Adviser, Emma, who identified her barriers to employment and worked with Julie to create an action plan with a realistic timeframe and the end goal of finding suitable, sustainable employment.
“The Restart Scheme helped me get a DBS check, covering the costs and supporting me with the paperwork. They helped me to tailor my CV to specific jobs and supported me regularly with job applications, emails and using computer technology, which was a big barrier for me”, said Julie.
Our team of expert Employment Advisers are there to support participants from day one, and, like Julie, that support continues even after they move into work. The Restart Scheme provides tailored in-work support to help participants feel happy, confident, and settled in their new role and workplace.
“When I finally secured a part‑time cleaning job, Emma and the team provided a monthly bus pass, and even helped with clothing and shoes for my new role. This really put my mind at rest when transitioning from benefits into paid employment.”
Julie completed mock interviews with Emma and the team to improve her confidence in formal settings and around new people. Completing several of our in-house courses boosted Julie’s social skills and self-confidence, by coming together with other like-minded individuals.
“Alongside my part-time role, I was able to complete a course in cleaning, COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health), and health and social care with the Restart Scheme, which boosted my confidence and opened new opportunities.
“Now, I’ve been offered a full-time job as a Care Worker. I feel like I’m finally able to plan for a better future. I’m gaining stability, rebuilding trust, and looking forward to what’s next.
“A huge thank you to Emma and all of the team at the Restart Scheme, Peterborough!”
