Finding balance - Tony’s story

Tony joined the Restart Programme with a strong desire to continue his career in cooking, while seeking a role that offered a better work-life balance.
Our recruitment specialists offer tailored support that puts the individual first. By understanding each participant’s strengths, aspirations and barriers, we deliver personalised guidance, practical job search support and ongoing encouragement to help them succeed in meaningful employment.
During his initial appointment, he met with Employment Adviser, Franco, who supported him with transforming his CV to showcase his extensive experience, professional training, and transferrable skills. Franco shared: “As a Chef, Tony has spent decades perfecting his craft, and now he’s beginning an exciting new chapter in his career. His experience includes working as a chef at prestigious hotels in Kensington, as well as professional training at one of the most respected culinary institutions in the UK.
“Like many professional chefs, Tony has spent much of his career working 60–70 hour weeks, dedicating long hours to his passion for food. Recently, Tony decided it was time for a change - a chance to regain work–life balance while still doing what he loves.”
Tony worked closely with Franco to build his interview skills, practising techniques, sample questions and attending workshops to prepare for the real thing. With a newly updated CV, Tony began applying for roles and hearing back from employers, which gave him a sense of confidence he hadn’t known before. Having been in the same job for so long, Tony was unfamiliar with the modern labour market and unsure how to approach job applications, so this progress marked a significant step forward in his journey.
“We are delighted to share that Tony has now secured a part time role as a chef at a local care home. This new position enables him to continue creating high-quality, nutritious meals while working fewer hours - giving him the well-deserved time and balance he has been hoping for,” said Franco.
Like Tony, many participants on the Restart Scheme receive financial support to help remove barriers to employment. This can include funding for interview attire, work clothing, and external certificates such as DBS checks. Our teams can also arrange a travel pass to cover the first month of work, helping ensure a smooth and confident transition back into paid employment.
Looking ahead, Tony hopes to use his extra time to share his skills with younger people by delivering cooking lessons, to pass on his knowledge and enthusiasm to the next generation of aspiring chefs.
Franco said: “This new role marks a fresh and fulfilling chapter for Tony, and we couldn’t be happier to have supported him on his journey.”
